A 27-Year-Old Is Taking The Reins Of State Champ Richland And Nobody In Washington Is Ready For It

Alright, Evergreen State, listen up! The Richland Bombers, our undisputed Washington high school basketball champions from this past season, just dropped a bombshell. They've officially hired their next head coach, and trust me, this one's got everyone talking. His name is Will Burghardt, and get this: he's only 27 years old! That's right, the state's #1 ranked team from the 2025-26 season just made the youngest hire in program history. This isn't just a coaching change, folks, this is a statement. What are the Bombers cooking? And what does it mean for the rest of Washington who already couldn't touch them?

The Kid Taking Charge: Who Is Will Burghardt?

So, who is this Will Burghardt, the guy stepping into one of the biggest high school coaching gigs in the state? At 27, he’s not just young; he’s now the youngest head coach the Richland boys basketball program has seen since 1947! This guy is the seventh head coach since then, and only the 30th in the program's long history. Before landing with the Bombers, Burghardt spent three seasons as the head boys basketball coach for Newport (OR). He put together a solid 49-24 overall record there. In his final season with the Cubs, he led them to an impressive 19-5 record and a seriously deep playoff run in the OHSAA. He knows how to win, even if he's barely old enough to rent a car without extra fees. It’s a bold move, giving the keys to a powerhouse program to someone so young, but maybe that's exactly what you do when you're already at the top.

Can a 27-Year-Old Keep the Dynasty Going?

Let’s talk about the team Burghardt is inheriting, because it's not just *any* team. The Richland Bombers are fresh off what can only be described as a legendary season. They finished 2025-26 with a perfect, absolutely spotless 28-0 record. Twenty-eight wins, zero losses! They capped it all off by dominating Gonzaga Prep in the Class 4A state championship, winning 63-49. This wasn't a fluke either; this was their fourth consecutive season with 20-plus wins. The Bombers were the #1 team in the final Washington 2025 High School Boys Basketball Massey Rankings, proving they were the best of the best. So, the question isn't whether Burghardt can build a program; it's whether he can maintain what's already a well-oiled machine, a dynasty in the making. Can this 27-year-old keep the undefeated streak alive? Can he lead them to another state title? We’re all gonna be glued to see how this plays out. Richland High School has always been known for its rich tradition in athletics, and this hiring certainly adds another fascinating chapter. What a wild offseason move! We'll be looking forward to every update and every game next season to see how Coach Burghardt and the Bombers chase that next trophy.
