A Mother's Unbearable Loss: The Perfect Day That Ended in Tragedy
Allison Bickel O'Shea's son Jack had what she calls a "perfect day" on Saturday. He went to confession. He played two baseball games for his high school team and excelled at first base like he always did. Then he went on his usual afternoon bike ride with friends. He never came home.
Jack O'Shea, 15 years old, was hit by a car around 9:00 PM that Saturday night in Durham, North Carolina. The driver was Joseph Savarino, grandson of former Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski. Savarino has been charged with misdemeanor driving while impaired after registering a blood alcohol reading of 0.11 a few hours after the collision. He admitted to drinking earlier that evening.

In a heartbreaking Facebook post, Allison described the last hours of her son's life with stunning clarity. "He woke up and asked to go to confession at Immaculate Conception Church. He then played two baseball games with his high school team, where he did what he always did, showed up fully and excelled at first base. Later, he went on his usual afternoon bike ride with friends," she wrote.
When the accident happened, Allison said her faith remained her anchor, even as the pain became unbearable. "As he was coming back into our neighborhood, he was involved in an accident and was hit by a car. Jesus took him immediately," she said. "We will never understand why his time here was so short or why he was needed so soon, but we have to hold onto our faith that he is now our angel."
The Weight of an Impossible Club
Allison's later statement captured the scale of what her family is enduring. "The depth of this grief is beyond anything we could have ever imagined. This is a club no parent ever wants to be part of," she said.
Savarino's bail was set at $100,000, and he has been released. Our thoughts remain with Jack's family during this unimaginable time.
