An Umpire Just Cost a Cubs Fan $1,000 With the Laziest Toss You've Ever Seen

At Wrigley Field, the Cubs run a between-inning promotion called Moundball that's supposed to be harmless fun with real money on the line. One lucky fan, usually a season ticket holder, gets the chance to win $1,000 cash if the home plate umpire can toss the ball from his location onto the mound. Sounds simple enough, right? The umps typically make it look easy. In fact, the success rate sits somewhere between 70-80%, and you'll normally see these guys put a decent amount of effort into it.

The Ump's Disgraceful Effort

But today's home plate ump decided to absolutely tank this one. And we're not talking about a close call or a ball that barely missed. The ump underhanded the throw like he was tossing a bag of garbage from a foot away, barely looking at his target, clearly just wanting to get the ball out of his hands as fast as possible. The ball came nowhere close to the mound. Not even in the ballpark. One extremely unlucky fan walked away without the $1,000 prize they had every reason to believe they had a solid shot at winning.

A Fan Got Robbed

Look, we've all seen umps try and fail at Moundball. That's part of the fun. But this wasn't an attempt. This was negligence. The effort was absolutely disgusting. That fan showed up to the game ready to potentially change their day, and this ump couldn't be bothered to actually try. It's the kind of thing that makes you wonder if there should be some accountability here.

Keep your head up, Cubs fan. You deserved better than that.
