Auston Matthews's College Years: From [College] to the NHL

NHL Sports

Many hockey fans often wonder about Auston Matthews's college years before he became the Toronto Maple Leafs' superstar. The fascinating truth is, Matthews took a unique, unconventional path to the NHL, entirely bypassing the collegiate route. Instead of attending an NCAA university, he opted for a development journey that would ultimately mold him into the generational talent we know today.

Matthews's foundational years were spent dominating with the U.S. National Team Development Program (USNTDP) from 2013 to 2015. This elite program is renowned for fostering young American talent, providing a rigorous schedule against both USHL teams and international competition. During his time there, Matthews shattered scoring records, showcasing his incredible puck skills, powerful shot, and keen hockey IQ. He became the all-time leading scorer for the program, surpassing legends like Patrick Kane, demonstrating his readiness for the professional ranks even as a teenager.

A Season in Switzerland: The Ultimate Preparation

After his stellar performance with the USNTDP, Matthews made another bold decision: he moved to Switzerland to play professionally for the ZSC Lions in the National League A for the 2015-16 season. This move, highly unusual for a top North American prospect, allowed him to play against men in a highly competitive European league, experiencing professional hockey at a young age. He thrived, scoring 24 goals and 46 points in 36 games, proving he could excel in a demanding environment and further refining his defensive game and physical strength. This experience, rather than a college degree, was his graduate-level hockey education.

His time with the USNTDP and in Switzerland provided Auston Matthews with invaluable experience, accelerating his development against tougher competition than traditional junior or collegiate hockey might have offered. This unconventional route proved to be the perfect springboard, preparing him perfectly to be drafted first overall by the Maple Leafs and immediately make an impact in the NHL.
