Blue Devils Blitz: Walla Walla Shuts Out North Thurston 4-0 in Class 3A State Soccer Opener

The roar of the crowd at Blue Devil Stadium was deafening as the Walla Walla High School boys soccer team delivered a spectacular 4-0 shutout victory over North Thurston on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. This commanding performance in the first round of the WIAA Class 3A state playoffs firmly plants the Blue Devils as a formidable force, sending a clear message to their competition. From the opening whistle, Walla Walla played with an intensity and precision that left no doubt about their intentions to make a deep run in the state tournament. This wasn't just a win, it was a statement, showcasing the immense talent and dedication cultivated within the Blue Devils' program in District 8.

Blue Devil Attack Proves Unstoppable

The Walla Walla offense was relentless, keeping North Thurston's defense on their heels throughout the entire match. Junior Damian Castruita and freshman Isaiah Betancourt were particularly dangerous upfront, constantly pushing forward and applying immense pressure on the Ram's backline, including junior Royce Rodriguez. Their tireless runs and intelligent movement created numerous scoring opportunities. Sophomore Cristian Tapia proved to be a masterful orchestrator in the midfield, distributing the ball with vision and precision, linking up effortlessly with his teammates to launch wave after wave of attacks. Another key contributor, Jaykob Lopez, repeatedly challenged the North Thurston goalkeeper, showcasing the depth of offensive talent the Blue Devils possess. Every player on the field for Walla Walla contributed to an attack that was both fluid and devastating, highlighting the hard work these young men put in day after day.

Fortress Blue Devil: A Masterclass in Defense

While the offense grabbed headlines with four goals, the defensive effort was equally, if not more, impressive. Sophomore goalkeeper Finnegan Martin earned a pristine clean sheet, a testament to his exceptional skill, sharp reflexes, and the impenetrable defense in front of him. Martin commanded his box with confidence, making crucial saves when called upon. Junior Mavrec Mills patrolled the midfield with authority, breaking up North Thurston's attempts to build momentum and turning defense into quick counter-attacks. The entire Walla Walla defensive unit worked in perfect synchronicity, denying the Rams any clear-cut chances and suffocating their offensive aspirations. It was a masterclass in disciplined, high-pressure defending, proving that these Washington state athletes are committed to excellence on both ends of the pitch.

Home Crowd Erupts in Pride

The final whistle brought an outpouring of joy and celebration from both the players and the passionate home crowd at Blue Devil Stadium. The atmosphere was electric, with families, friends, and fellow students cheering on their Blue Devils every step of the way. Senior Felix Hernandez Saldana, a leader on and off the field, shared a heartfelt embrace with Abigail Castellano amidst the team's exuberant celebration, embodying the camaraderie and spirit of this tight-knit squad. These moments, born from countless hours of practice and sacrifice, are what make high school sports so special. The Walla Walla community rallied behind their team, celebrating a well-deserved victory that kicks off their state tournament journey with incredible momentum. The road ahead in the Class 3A WIAA State Tournament will be challenging, but if the Blue Devils continue to play with this level of passion and execution, they are poised for a truly memorable season.
