114 Wins, Back-to-Back Titles: UW-Oshkosh Just Hired This Coach and the Program Is About to Get WILD!

Alright, Seattle, listen up, because sometimes the biggest news isn't always from Lumen Field or T-Mobile Park. We just caught wind of a move out in D3 college hoops, and trust me, this coach's resume is legit eye-popping. Darryl Sims, UW-Oshkosh Assistant Chancellor for Intercollegiate Athletics, just announced Steve Schweer as the 16th head coach for their men’s basketball program. And when you look at what this guy has done, it's clear UW-Oshkosh is not just hiring a coach, they're bringing in a proven winner who makes programs championship contenders!

This Guy's Resume is Absolute Fire, No Joke

Before heading to Oshkosh, Schweer was tearing it up at Illinois College, where he led their men's basketball program for eight seasons from 2019 to 2026. This wasn't just a good run, folks, it was the *most successful* eight-season stretch in Illinois College program history. We're talking a phenomenal 114-79 (.591) record overall. And get this: he delivered back-to-back 20-win seasons in 2023 (25-3) and 2024 (24-5)! The Blue Boys, under Schweer, snagged the first two Midwest Conference regular season championships *ever* for the program in 2023 and 2024, then followed it up by grabbing the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship with tournament titles both years. They even set program records for wins (25 in 2024) and consecutive wins (16, between Nov. 15, 2023, and Jan. 21, 2024). This man knows how to win. He even coached Illinois College to their first-ever NCAA tournament game victory, a tight 59-57 win over University of Dubuque in 2024, before a nail-biting 68-67 loss the next night. Players under his guidance earned 13 All-Midwest Conference honors, including a conference player of the year nod for Jake Mazrimas in 2024. Schweer himself was the Midwest Conference and D3hoops.com Region 9 Coach of the Year in 2023! That's just straight up impressive.

More Than Just X's and O's

But Schweer isn't just a wizard on the court. He was also the associate director of athletics at Illinois College for the last three academic years, showing he's a leader beyond game strategy. He created the Student-Athlete Justice, Equity and Inclusion Team, served on campus committees, and even coordinated gameday operations for a bunch of other sports. Before his time at Illinois College, he was head assistant men’s basketball coach at North Central College for two seasons, helping them win a tournament title and reach the third round of the DIII Championship in 2017. He also spent five years at Monmouth College in various roles, including assistant men’s basketball coach and assistant to the athletic director. Across all his coaching stops, student-athletes have raked in 58 all-conference honors, four conference player of the year awards, 15 all-region honors, and four All-America nods. Nineteen players have hit 1,000 career points, with one even breaking 2,000! Talk about developing talent! Schweer begins his new gig on June 1, and honestly, the excitement is palpable. Sims said they're "excited to welcome Steve to Oshkosh," and that his "great enthusiasm" will continue UW-Oshkosh's "great tradition of success." Schweer himself is pumped, calling it a "tremendous honor" and stating his family is "ecstatic." He’s ready for the "challenge of bringing championships back to Oshkosh!" Sounds like a man with a plan! We're gonna be watching to see how quickly he gets those championships rolling.
