Brewers' Bats Are Waking Up and Tigers Have to Stop Them Tonight

The Milwaukee Brewers just put on an offensive clinic against Detroit, and they're coming back for more. After pounding 16 hits in a 12-4 demolition of the Tigers on Tuesday, the Brewers are looking to steal the series with a win on Wednesday night at Comerica Park.

This wasn't some fluke either. Milwaukee's second-best offensive performance of the season included a jaw-dropping seven-run eighth inning that basically buried the Tigers. Leadoff hitter Brice Turang was the star, driving in four runs to lead the charge. The Brewers have now won five of their last six games and reached double digits in runs for only the second time all season. They scored 14 back in their season opener against the White Sox last month, so this kind of explosion is still relatively rare. When it happens though, it's devastating.

Casey Mize Is Pitching Like an Ace (Finally)

Detroit will counter with right-hander Casey Mize, who has been absolutely lights out despite his 1-1 record not showing it. His last start was a masterclass, holding Boston to three hits and one walk over 6 2/3 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. He got zero run support in that 1-0 loss in 10 innings, which tells you everything about how unfair baseball can be.

Before that performance, Mize allowed just two runs combined across three other starts, covering 18 1/3 innings. The only blemish on his resume this season came on April 6 against Minnesota in brutal weather, when he gave up five runs in 4 1/3 innings. Finished 2025 with a 14-6 record in 28 starts and the 2018 top draft pick is finally pitching like it after dealing with injuries throughout his career.

"I feel good," Mize said. "I feel like I've had three good starts and one bad one. I feel fine, but we've got to translate them to wins. That's what I care about the most."

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch was blown away by his most recent outing: "Casey was incredible. What I told him afterwards was that's the best combo of stuff execution, the way his body's moving, I mean, he was excellent."

Brewers Counter With Their Own Hot Arm

Milwaukee's Chad Patrick (1-0, 0.95 ERA) is coming off his best start of the season. He held Toronto to one run and three hits over 6 2/3 innings in a 2-1 victory last Wednesday. He struck out only two, but that's not what he's chasing.

"I think everything's coming together," Patrick said. "I'm not going to do anything sexy out there. It's here you go, hit it, swing and miss, do what you do. My job is to get weak contact and swings and misses, they come and they go."

This will be Patrick's first career start against the Tigers, so both teams are heading into a true pitcher's duel. The Brewers' bats are hot, but if Mize stays sharp and Patrick continues rolling, Wednesday night could come down to one mistake. First pitch is set for Wednesday night in Detroit.
