Buffalo Finally Ends 19-Year Playoff Drought and Nobody Saw This Coming

The Buffalo Sabres just did something they haven't done since 2007: they won a playoff series. And they did it the right way, closing out the Boston Bruins 4-1 in Game 6 on Friday night at TD Garden. This isn't some feel-good story that came out of nowhere, either. Buffalo came to play from the opening puck and never looked back, building a 2-0 lead in the first period and coasting to the conference semifinals.

A Dominant Wire-to-Wire Performance

Alex Tuch and Mattias Samuelsson got the party started early, scoring the first two goals of the game before the Bruins could even settle in. Then Zach Benson and Josh Norris added insurance in the third period to put this one completely out of reach. Tage Thompson and Rasmus Dahlin were everywhere, each racking up two assists in the win. And goaltender Alex Lyon? The guy was a wall in net, stopping 25 of 26 shots. The Sabres won all three games they played in Boston during this series, which tells you everything about how they dominated on the road.

For Boston, it was a disappointing end to their run. David Pastrnak scored the lone goal, but Jeremy Swayman stopped 22 shots in a losing effort. Sometimes that's just not enough when your team plays from behind all game long.

What's Next: The Semifinals Await

Buffalo advances to face the winner of the other Eastern Conference semifinal matchup, and honestly, this team looks hungry. Nineteen years is a long time to wait for your moment. The Sabres got theirs on Friday night in Boston, and now they're moving on.
