Coby Mayo's Bat Wakes Up, Orioles Stun Royals With Sixth-Inning Explosion

The Baltimore Orioles just put together one of those innings that completely flips a game on its head. Down to their final strike in the sixth, they erupted for six runs and walked out of Kansas City with an 8-6 victory over the Royals on Wednesday afternoon, and it was Coby Mayo's three-run homer that did the real damage.

Six Runs in One Inning Changes Everything

Before that sixth frame, this game was completely tied at 3-3. Leody Taveras had just slapped an RBI single to knot it up, but then the Orioles' bats came alive in a hurry. Mayo stepped up in the middle of the chaos and launched a three-run blast that turned a tied game into an Orioles lead they would not relinquish. One swing, three runs, and suddenly Baltimore was sitting pretty with an 8-6 advantage heading into the final three innings.

Holding On Down the Stretch

The Orioles got tested in the late innings but held their ground. A visiting team winning at Kauffman Stadium is never easy, especially after your bats go cold early and you have to claw back into it. But that sixth inning explosion gave Baltimore just enough breathing room to survive the Royals' attempts to chip away at the lead.

This is the kind of game that separates teams early in the season. The Orioles could have folded when things got tight. Instead, they pushed back, got contributions up and down the order, and Mayo delivered the knock that mattered most. That is baseball at its best.
