Connor McDavid's Ankle Could Cost Edmonton Everything Tonight

The Edmonton Oilers are staring down the barrel of playoff elimination Tuesday night, and they might have to do it without their best player. Connor McDavid is a game-time decision for Game 5 due to an ankle injury, and that's the kind of news that makes you hold your breath if you're an Oilers fan.

One Game Away From Going Home

This is as tight as it gets. The Oilers are facing possible elimination from the playoffs, which means one loss ends their season. McDavid being banged up and potentially unavailable for a win-or-go-home game is the worst timing imaginable. You don't want to be in a Game 5 elimination scenario without your franchise player on the ice.

The Ankle Question Mark

The team hasn't confirmed whether McDavid will be able to go, which is why we're sitting in this weird limbo heading into Tuesday night. Game-time decisions are always nerve-wracking because you don't know what you're going to get until warmups. If McDavid can't play, Edmonton's already thin margin for error gets a whole lot thinner.

Playoff hockey is unforgiving, especially in elimination games. Every shift matters, every line counts, and you need your best guys doing damage. An injury to your star center in this spot is exactly the kind of thing that seasons are made of or unmade by.

What's Next

We'll find out soon enough if McDavid can go Tuesday. Either way, Edmonton needs to find a way to survive and get back home for Game 6. The Oilers have their backs against the wall, injury report or not.
