Cubs Fan Got Robbed of $1,000 and an Umpire's Lazy Toss Is Why

Here's a brutal way to lose a thousand bucks: watch an umpire completely botch the one job he had during Wrigley's between-inning promotion. That's exactly what happened to one unlucky Cubs fan when the home plate ump delivered what can only be described as the most pathetic underhand toss in Moundball history.

The Moundball Game and Why It Actually Matters

Every home game at Wrigley, the Cubs run this promotion called Moundball. It's a simple concept that usually benefits a season ticket holder with a shot at $1,000 cash. All the ump has to do is throw the ball from home plate to the mound between innings. Sounds easy, right? The success rate is ridiculous too, somewhere in that 70-80% range. Most umps actually put effort into it. But this one? Not a chance.

An Ump's Half-Hearted Toss Costs a Fan Everything

The throw came out as an underhand flop that looked like someone tossing a bag of trash into a garbage can from a foot away. No care. Barely looking at the target. Just wanted the ball out of his hands and off his mind. The ball came nowhere close to the mound. Nowhere. That fan walked away with nothing instead of $1,000 cash because the umpire couldn't be bothered to actually try. It was such a disgusting effort that it honestly made you sick for the guy.

This wasn't a challenging throw. This wasn't a difficult ask. But when an ump puts that little effort into something that directly impacts a fan's night, you have to wonder if maybe he needs to be looked at for this one.

What's Next

Cubs fans deserve better than that kind of effort during an in-game promotion. When a promotion is on the line and a fan's got a legitimate shot at walking away with real money, the people running it have a responsibility to actually try.
