Detroit Just Won Their First Playoff Series Since 2008 and Extended Bickerstaff Before the Confetti Even Settled

The Detroit Pistons didn't waste a second. One day after J.B. Bickerstaff led them to their first playoff series victory in 18 years, the team announced a contract extension for their head coach. That's how you know something special is happening in the Motor City.

From Worst Record in the League to Eastern Conference No. 1

Bickerstaff took over the Pistons at the start of the 2024-25 season, replacing Monty Williams. The job was salvage work. Before he arrived, Detroit had posted the worst record in the entire NBA for back-to-back seasons. Nobody was expecting this turnaround.

Instead, Bickerstaff turned it into one of the year's best coaching stories. He's posted a 104-60 record during the regular season, guided the team to back-to-back playoff appearances, and led them to the No. 1 overall seed in the Eastern Conference this year. The Pistons won 60 games in the regular season alone. That's the kind of foundation that gets you noticed.

Coming Back From Down 3-1 in Game 7

The Pistons proved they belong in the second round the hard way. They faced the Orlando Magic in the first round and found themselves down 3-1 in the series. Most teams don't come back from that. Detroit did, forcing a Game 7 and winning it 116-94 on Sunday to advance.

That victory wasn't just about making the second round. It was about proving the rebuild was real, that Bickerstaff's system works, and that this roster has the mental toughness to finish the job. By extending him Monday, the Pistons sent a clear message: this is our guy.

What's Next

The Pistons are in the second round with momentum on their side and a coach locked in for the future. That's how you build something that lasts.
