Egbuka Called It in November: Baker Mayfield's Son Named Exactly What This Buc Predicted

Here's one of those moments that makes you do a double take. Back in November, when Baker Mayfield and his wife Emily found out they were having a boy, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' social media team decided to have some fun with it. They gathered a bunch of players to suggest names on camera. One name stuck. One name was exactly right. And nobody saw it coming from a second-year receiver.

The November Video That Nailed It

Emeka Egbuka was just throwing out ideas like everyone else. Wide receiver Tez Johnson was in the video too, riffing on what would make a good name for Baker's kid. That's when Egbuka just said it: "Maverick." Clean. Simple. Confident.

Johnson wasn't immediately sold. He came back with, "That ain't no dawg name." But Egbuka stood by it. "Maverick Mayfield ... just call him Mav," he said. And you know what? Johnson reconsidered on the spot. "That's low-key hard. You be coming up with something," Johnson admitted.

Six Months Later, It's Official

Fast forward to Wednesday. Baker and Emily announced the arrival of their second child, a boy, born April 16, 2026. His name? Maverick Thorne Mayfield. Exactly what Egbuka called it back in that November video.

It's the kind of thing that gets you talking in the locker room. One random suggestion in a fun social media bit actually becomes the kid's real name. That's wild. That's the kind of moment teammates don't let you forget about either. Egbuka's got bragging rights for life on this one.
