Fernando Mendoza Is Going to the Raiders at Pick 1, and Vegas Hasn't Won a Playoff Game Since 2003

The Las Vegas Raiders made it official: 2025 Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza is their guy. The Indiana quarterback, who led the Hoosiers to a perfect 16-0 season and a national title, is heading to Sin City as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. For Raiders fans starving for playoff success since that AFC Championship game on January 19, 2003, this is the moment they hand Mendoza the keys to turn the franchise around.

A Heisman Winner Built for the Big Stage

Mendoza didn't just win the Heisman. He dominated it. The Indiana signal-caller racked up 2,362 total points in voting, crushing the competition. Diego Pavia of Vanderbilt finished second with 1,435 points, and Jeremiyah Love of Notre Dame came in third with 719. Mendoza's voting total wasn't even close. This wasn't a nail-biter or a controversial call. The voters were unified on one thing: the Indiana quarterback was the most talented player in college football.

Film Room Gold

Here's what should have Raiders scouts licking their chops: no quarterback in the past 100 years played more games in a single season for coaches and scouts to study than Mendoza did in 2025. Sixteen games. A perfect season. Film for days. That's not a small thing when you're about to invest franchise capital in a prospect. The Raiders know exactly what they're getting, and what they saw was a kid who can lead a team to a championship.

The Heisman Fraternity is about to get another member at the top of the draft board. Mendoza joins an exclusive club of winners taken early in the draft, and Raiders fans are ready to believe this is the pick that changes everything. Vegas hasn't had much to celebrate in the playoffs lately. Maybe this is finally their moment.
