Gannon Caps Cinderella Run With DII Championship Blowout Over Lander

Gannon just won its first DII men's basketball championship in program history, and it wasn't even close. The Knights demolished Lander 84-61 on Sunday, April 5 at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. For a third-seeded team that had to grind through regionals and quarterfinals, this was the kind of championship performance that makes you believe in March magic, except it happened in April.

How Gannon Got Here

The 64-team DII field started narrowing down after the selection show on March 8. Eight regional qualifiers punched their tickets to Indianapolis, and Gannon was one of them. The Knights came in as a 3-seed and played like they had something to prove. They beat Michigan Tech 75-49 in the quarterfinals on March 25, then turned up the heat in the semifinals, crushing Oklahoma Baptist 98-80 on Friday, March 27. By the time they reached the title game, Gannon was rolling.

The Final: A One-Sided Affair

Lander came in as the 5-seed and had their own solid run through the bracket, but they ran into a buzzsaw in Gannon. The championship game on April 5 was never competitive. Gannon's defense was suffocating, their offense was efficient, and by the end, it was a 23-point victory. This wasn't a nail-biter. This was dominance when it mattered most.

What This Means

Gannon's first DII championship is officially in the books, and it puts them in rarified air. They join a list of programs that have won it all at this level. The Knights proved that a 3-seed with the right chemistry and execution can beat anyone on any given night. This is the kind of season that gets remembered.
