Young Gun Takes Reins: Will Burghardt Named Head Coach of Richland Bombers Basketball

Richland, WA, is buzzing with anticipation as the storied Richland Bombers boys basketball program announced the hiring of Will Burghardt as its new head coach. At just 27 years old, Burghardt steps into a role rich with history, becoming the youngest coach ever to lead the Bombers on the hardwood. His arrival marks a new chapter for a program fresh off an undefeated Class 4A state championship season, signaling a bold, youth-driven direction for one of Washington's prep basketball powerhouses.

The announcement, made earlier this week, confirmed Burghardt as only the seventh head coach for the Bombers since 1947, and the 30th overall in program history. This rarity underscores the significance of the hire, as Burghardt takes the reins of a team that epitomizes excellence in the Evergreen State. The Richland community, known for its passionate support of the Bombers, is eager to see how this dynamic young leader will build upon the incredible legacy he now inherits.

Building on a Dynasty's Foundation

Burghardt isn't just taking over a good program; he's stepping into a dynasty. The Richland Bombers completed a flawless 2025-26 season with an astounding 28-0 record, culminating in a dominant 63-49 victory over Gonzaga Prep in the WIAA Class 4A state championship game. This remarkable run marked their fourth consecutive 20-plus win season and firmly cemented their position as the state's elite, finishing at No. 1 according to the final Washington 2025 High School Boys Basketball Massey Rankings. These young athletes have set an incredibly high bar, and Burghardt's challenge, and opportunity, will be to maintain that championship standard.

The Bombers' consistent success is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and talent fostered within the Richland High School program. Every player who steps onto that court pours their heart and soul into representing their community, and the results speak for themselves. The expectation for excellence is deeply ingrained, and Coach Burghardt will be tasked with continuing that culture of relentless pursuit of victory and personal growth for these student-athletes.

A Proven Leader with a Fresh Perspective

While young, Burghardt is not without head coaching experience. He joins the Bombers after a successful three-season stint as the head boys basketball coach at Newport High School in Oregon. During his tenure with the Newport Cubs, Burghardt compiled an impressive overall record of 49-24. His final season saw the Cubs achieve a strong 19-5 record and embark on a deep playoff run in the OHSAA, showcasing his ability to lead teams to significant postseason success. This background suggests a coach who understands how to develop talent and navigate the pressures of high-stakes competition.

His prior experience, combined with a youthful energy and fresh perspective, makes Burghardt an exciting choice for Richland. The high school sports scene in Washington is incredibly competitive, brimming with passionate players and dedicated coaches. The future for Richland boys basketball under Will Burghardt looks incredibly bright, and fans across the state will undoubtedly be watching to see what this talented young coach brings to the reigning Class 4A champions.
