HEROIC, Spirit, and SAR Punch Their Tickets to Bucharest: The $1 Million Dota 2 Gauntlet Heats Up Thursday

Three teams just locked down their spots in the PGL Wallachia Season 8 playoffs after brutal do-or-die matches in Bucharest, Romania. HEROIC, South America Rejects, and Team Spirit all survived Wednesday's Round 5 bloodbath to advance from a 16-team Swiss-system group stage where only the top eight make it through. The stakes? A $1 million prize pool with $300,000 waiting for whoever hoists the trophy on Sunday.

Survival of the Fittest: Wednesday's Elimination Round

Every team with a 2-2 record knew one loss meant going home. HEROIC made it look easy, sweeping GamerLegion in 42 and 44 minutes. SAR had to sweat it out a bit more, knocking out MOUZ 2-1 with victories in 45 and 58 minutes sandwiched around a 53-minute loss. Team Spirit turned in the day's longest grind, pulling out a marathon 72-minute win on red before closing it out in 40 minutes on green against Xtreme Gaming. These weren't blowouts. These were the kind of matches that separate teams ready for playoff intensity from those headed home.

The Bracket Is Set: Thursday Brings the Real Tests

Now the real tournament starts. The double-elimination format means Thursday kicks off the upper-bracket quarterfinals with some seriously stacked matchups: PARIVISION takes on South America Rejects, Aurora Gaming faces HEROIC, Team Liquid battles Team Falcons, and BetBoom Team tangles with Team Spirit. Every match is best-of-three until Sunday's grand final goes best-of-five.

The prize pool cascades down from that $300,000 grand prize all the way to $10,000 for 15th and 16th place, with GamerLegion, Xtreme Gaming, and MOUZ already locked into the $20,000 consolation tier after Wednesday's exits. The whole thing wraps Sunday with the championship on the line.
