Illinois Just Landed a 5-Star Guard and a Mr. Basketball and Nobody's Talking About What It Means

The college basketball transfer portal opened one day after the NCAA championship game, and Illinois wasted zero time. The Illini signed high school recruits Quentin Coleman and Zavier Zens on Sunday, and if you've been paying attention to the early recruiting wars, you know why this matters.

Coleman Is Elite. Like, Really Elite.

Coleman, a 6-4 guard from St. Louis, is a five-star recruit and the No. 27 player in the Class of 2026 according to 247Sports composite rankings. He was Missouri's Gatorade Player of the Year. This kid committed to Illinois back on April 3, and now it's official. Coleman's the kind of prospect that changes the trajectory of a roster, and Brad Underwood's bringing him in to keep the momentum rolling after that Final Four run.

Zens Brings Gatorade Player of the Year Credentials Too

Zens, a 6-7 forward from Milwaukee, won Wisconsin's Gatorade Player of the Year and Mr. Basketball honors. He announced his commitment Friday. Both Coleman and Zens join guards Lucas Morillo and Ethan Brown and forward Landon Davis in the Illini's incoming freshman class. That's a loaded haul of talent walking into Champaign.

On the flip side, Illinois guard Brandon Lee, who appeared in 17 games as a freshman, entered the transfer portal on Sunday. The exits are happening, but Underwood's additions suggest he's building something special for next season. With Andrej Stojaković returning for his senior year and Stefan Vaaks arriving from Providence, the Illini have the firepower to make another run. They might still need more bodies to replace some losses, but the skeleton of another big year is already in place.
