J.P. Losman's Coaching Pit Stops Across America Built Him For This Washington Job
J.P. Losman is ready to lead the Huskies quarterbacks room, and he's got the miles on his coaching resume to prove it. The newly promoted QBs coach spent last year as an offensive quality control coach before getting the bump to an on-field role this offseason. His path to get here? A wild ride across college football that includes a defensive coaching stint at Oklahoma, and he credits all those stops for shaping who he is as a coach.
"I had no idea how this was all going to shake out," Losman said. "That's the risk you take when you decide to go somewhere new and maybe leave the nest a little bit. You just kinda roll with the punches in this game. I've been in it for a long time and football has taken me all over the place. I've had amazing experiences any place I've ever been, always been around some great people, and you get here and something happens and it's just like 'it's just meant to be'."

Here's some good news for continuity at Washington: the running back and offensive line rooms didn't get gutted in the offseason. Yeah, the program lost some key guys, but most of the core talent is sticking around to compete for starting spots in spring practice. That's where running backs coach Scottie Graham and offensive line coach Mike Switzer come in, and both are fired up to see how their guys stack up against each other when the pads come on.
Graham is keeping it simple with his philosophy: "The central theme of our program is competition. I want to see them compete and who comes out on top." The running back room has some serious speed to work with. Graham pointed out that Brian Bonner runs a 10.4 in the 100 meters, Quaid Carr clocks a 10.5, and Jordan Washington hits a 10.2. "They're extremely fast. We could probably win the 4x1 NCAAs in our running back room," Graham said. Bonner is special because he's still just 17 years old and should technically still be in high school, so he's still developing and learning on the job.
Graham was also named assistant head coach, and he doesn't take the honor lightly. "I thank God for it, I thank coach Fisch. I've been working for him since my first opportunity to work. It's an honor I don't take lightly and I'll continue to do what I'm doing and what I'm asked to do to help develop this team."
The O-Line Is Getting Real About Spring Ball
Switzer is keeping a close eye on freshman tackle Kodi Greene, who's already turning heads with his approach to the daily grind. "His attention to detail, his preparation, his natural attributes, athletically and physically, stick out," Switzer said. "You see him in the weight room, you see him on the field moving, I think it was our first day of PRPs, some of the older guys saw him do a backside cut-off of a wide zone and everyone starts turning heads."
Two linemen who had solid offseasons are Soane Faasolo and Elishah Jackett. Faasolo dropped serious weight and is now just under 320 pounds after working incredibly hard all winter. Jackett jumped up to 296 after hovering around 277, a big accomplishment for him. "Both of those guys have had their best offseasons to date," Switzer said. The group is also locked in on winning the Joe Moore Award, though Switzer is keeping expectations grounded. "All we can worry about is getting better each day. Obviously having a goal in sight that's far, far off, I think we've got to focus on getting better as individuals throughout spring ball."
