Jake Bennett's Getting His Shot Against Houston, and the Red Sox Are Banking on It Right Now

The Boston Red Sox are rolling the dice on a fresh arm. Left-hander Jake Bennett is getting called up from Triple-A Worcester to make his major league debut on Friday when the Red Sox host the Houston Astros. This isn't just roster shuffling, either. The timing matters because the Red Sox placed ace Garrett Crochet on the 15-day injured list, which means they needed help in the rotation immediately.

Bennett Gets His Moment

Bennett's been grinding in Triple-A, and now he gets the biggest stage of his career. A debut against the Astros is no warmup act. Houston brings legit firepower every single night, so if Bennett can pitch effectively in this spot, he proves he belongs. The Red Sox wouldn't be bringing him up to make an appearance and disappear. They're signaling they think he can contribute right now.

The Crochet Factor

Here's what makes this move necessary: Garrett Crochet going down is a real blow. When your ace hits the injured list in May, you don't have the luxury of easing prospects into the big leagues. You need immediate production. Bennett's recall is the direct response to that hole in the rotation. The Red Sox are short on healthy arms, which means Bennett walks into a situation where he could see significant innings if he proves capable.

First pitch is Friday night in Boston. Bennett will take the mound knowing this is his chance to make a statement. The kid's waited for this moment. Now he's got it.
