Josh Graham Is Back, and Lawrence County Fans Are Absolutely Losing Their Minds Right Now

Seven long years. That’s how long it had been since Josh Graham was on the sidelines for Lawrence County softball. In his FIRST year back? He made history! The Red Devils just snagged their school's FIRST EVER softball state championship, absolutely crushing an 11-year state tournament drought. Lawrence County fans, you gotta be ecstatic. Plus, he was just named The Daily's Class 5A-7A softball coach of the year!

The Unspoken Secret: It's Never About Him (But It Totally Is)

You know how it is with true leaders? They’re always deflecting, putting the spotlight on the team. Josh Graham? Totally that guy. Ask him about this historic run, he’ll hit you with, "It's never about me." But his players, especially Bella Cross, are spilling the beans. She called his return "one of the missing pieces" that flipped a talented roster, one that hadn't even SEEN the state tournament before, into legit state champions. Cross said Graham is the first person there when you need him, the first to say, "Hey, I believe in you. You’ve got this, keep going." That's powerful stuff. She explained, "We all knew that, and that's why we all showed up for him every single day." That kind of buy-in? Only happens with real trust and belief.

Grind Time: How the Red Devils Built a Champion

Think this just happened overnight? Nah, fam. This was a grind. At the season's start, Graham asked their goals. "Every single person said we wanted to win a state championship," Cross recalled. He laid out the sacrifices, the work, the "biggest opportunity in front of us, but we have to work. We have to keep pushing." That’s the relentless pursuit we recognize, the grit that makes champions. These Red Devils weren't just talking, they were DOING. Extra practices? Check. After-school workouts? You bet. Even beach trips during spring break turned into workout days. Graham said they worked out three days a week, even on game day! "They never complained about it." That’s the difference maker. Their 60-game season was a marathon, finishing 49-10-1. They snatched their third straight area championship, dominated the North regional as top qualifier, then battled through the losers bracket to claim the whole darn thing. Talk about digging deep! Graham gives massive props to past players, noting "expectations for this softball program was laid well before this." And big shoutouts to his assistant coaches, Jackie Burch, Chad Segars, Megan Barton, and Cortney Lovelady. Graham said it was a "true staff" where "everybody had their own role," making it like a family. He even juggled being an assistant principal, trusting his crew completely. "I knew they were going to work well and get what they needed," he said. So, while this incredible 49-10-1 season is in the books for the Lawrence County Red Devils, the real win for Coach Graham wasn't the trophy or recognition. He saw players completely buy into a common goal. "I've got a great group of girls that bought into the weight room, they bought into the off-season work, they bought into our system and what we’re doing. They trusted us," he explained. That's the legacy: trust and belief. The bar has been set, Lawrence County. The whole state is watching to see what this program builds on after this historic championship run. You love to see it!
