Josh Naylor Gets the Last Laugh With ABS Challenge Walk Against Oakland

Here's a moment that perfectly sums up baseball in 2026: Josh Naylor stepped up to the plate against the Athletics on Monday night, took a pitch that looked questionable, and let the technology do the talking. The ABS challenge came back in his favor, and Naylor walked it off the field with a smirk. The call got overturned, and just like that, the Mariners had another runner on base in what turned out to be a tight 6-4 loss to Oakland at T-Mobile Park.

The Call That Changed Everything (For a Second)

In a game where every at-bat mattered, Naylor wasn't about to let an umpire's judgment stand if the technology said otherwise. The Athletics pitcher delivered, Naylor held his ground, and the initial call had him striking out. But that's where the ABS system stepped in. A challenge later, and the technology confirmed what Naylor thought all along: that pitch was outside. The walk got credited, and suddenly the Mariners had another chance to manufacture some runs.

Still Not Enough in a Tight One

As cool as Naylor's moment was, the Mariners couldn't quite get over the hump against Oakland. The final score of 6-4 tells you everything you need to know about how this one played out. It was tight, it was competitive, and it came down to who could scratch out one more run when it mattered most. The Athletics found a way to do it, leaving Seattle with another frustrating loss to a division rival.

Games like this one sting a little extra because they're so close. One more run, one more hit, and the narrative changes completely. The Mariners will have plenty of chances to bounce back, but for now, this one goes to Oakland. The team heads into the next stretch knowing they can't let these close ones slip away if they want to stay competitive through the season.
