In 1969, the NBA was abuzz with anticipation for one player: Lew Alcindor. Standing at an imposing 7'2", Alcindor had dominated college basketball at UCLA, leading the Bruins to three consecutive national championships. It was clear he was a generational talent, and every team coveted the opportunity to draft him. The Milwaukee Bucks, a fledgling franchise in only their second season, won a coin toss against the Phoenix Suns for the first overall pick in the 1969 NBA Draft. With that pick, they secured Alcindor, laying the cornerstone for what would become an incredibly successful era for the franchise and the player who would soon be known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Alcindor's impact was immediate and profound. In his rookie season (1969-70), he averaged an astounding 28.8 points and 14.5 rebounds per game, instantly transforming the Bucks from a 27-win team to a 56-win contender. His incredible athleticism, graceful skyhook, and sheer dominance earned him the NBA Rookie of the Year award, and he was also selected for the All-NBA Second Team. The league quickly recognized they had a superstar on their hands, and the Bucks, previously an afterthought, were suddenly a force to be reckoned with.
Championship Glory and a New Name
The Bucks’ trajectory continued its sharp upward climb. Before the 1970-71 season, Milwaukee made another pivotal move, acquiring legendary guard Oscar Robertson. This partnership proved to be an unstoppable force. Alcindor, now surrounded by an elite playmaker, elevated his game further, leading the league in scoring with 31.7 points per game. He was rightfully named the NBA's Most Valuable Player. That same year, the Milwaukee Bucks, with Alcindor at their helm, swept the Baltimore Bullets in the NBA Finals, securing the franchise's first and only championship. It was during this period that Lew Alcindor officially changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, solidifying his identity as one of basketball's most iconic figures, already with a championship ring in just his second professional season.
