Luis Torrens Just Turned 30 and the Mets Handed Him $11.5 Million to Stay

Luis Torrens rang in his 30th birthday on Saturday with the kind of present most of us only dream about. The New York Mets locked him up with a two-year contract extension through 2028, reportedly worth $11.5 million. Not bad for a guy in his ninth season who is primarily known for what he does behind the plate, not at the plate.

The Numbers Tell a Story

Let's be real: Torrens is not putting up eye-popping offensive numbers right now. In 13 games this season, he is batting .200 with two doubles and four RBIs. This is his third year with the Mets, and he is pulling down $2.275 million for the 2026 season on top of this new extension. Over his nine-year career, Torrens has been a career .226 hitter with 27 homers and 127 RBIs across 421 games. Those are backup catcher numbers, and the Mets are clearly betting on his glove rather than his stick.

A Journey Through the League

Torrens has been around. He spent time with the San Diego Padres in 2017 and again in 2019-20. He came to the Pacific Northwest and played for the Seattle Mariners from 2020-23. After a brief stint with the Chicago Cubs in 2023, he landed with the Mets and has been there since. This extension keeps him in New York through 2028, locking in stability for a defensive-minded catcher entering his fourth decade.

The Mets are betting that Torrens' value behind the plate and his veteran presence justify the investment. In this season's early going, the team is clearly comfortable enough with their backup catcher to commit long-term.
