Magic President Fires Coach After Blowing 3-1 Lead, Won't Blow Up the Whole Team

The Orlando Magic are cleaning house at the top, but they're not burning the whole thing down. Magic president Jeff Weltman fired head coach Jamahl Mosley on Monday after five seasons, one day after the team collapsed in the first round. But here's the thing: Weltman is not planning to "dismantle" the roster.

The reason? He thinks this team can still compete when it's healthy.

How Bad Did It Get?

We're talking about one of the worst playoff collapses you can imagine. The Magic blew a 3-1 series lead to the top-seeded Detroit Pistons. And not just any collapse: in Game 6, Orlando was up 24 points in the third quarter. Twenty-four. They still lost that game and fell in seven.

That kind of second-half meltdown gets you fired. Mosley is out after half a decade running the show.

The Injury Excuse Is Real

Here's where Weltman's optimism comes in. Star forward Franz Wagner suffered a strained right calf in Game 4 and then the Magic dropped three straight without him. Weltman called that loss a "gut punch," but he also pointed to what the team showed when Wagner was on the court as evidence that the core is worth keeping.

The message: this team looked dangerous when whole. A coaching change might be all they need to get back on track, not a complete teardown.

What's Next

Weltman has made his move at the coaching position. Now the Magic have to find their next head coach and figure out if a fresh voice on the sideline is enough to prevent another first-round flame-out.
