The Seattle Mariners offense is stuck in a rut, and Friday night at T-Mobile Park proved it once again. A 5-0 loss to the Texas Rangers marked the Mariners' fourth straight defeat after getting swept by San Diego on the road. The bats that the team desperately needs to wake up keep falling flat when it matters most, leaving the home crowd frustrated and the season slipping away early.

The Mariners (8-13) had their best shot in the bottom of the first inning with the bases loaded and nobody out. Catcher Cal Raleigh walked on four pitches, center fielder Julio Rodriguez doubled, and first baseman Josh Naylor drew a walk after battling Rangers starter Jacob deGrom through a grueling 10-pitch at-bat. But then the wheels fell off. Left fielder Randy Arozarena fell behind 0-2 and struck out swinging. Right fielder Luke Raley stepped up with the bases full and two outs, then struck out swinging on six pitches. Just like that, the opportunity evaporated. Seattle couldn't get another runner past second base for the rest of the game.

Gilbert Battles Through, Relievers Can't Hold It

Logan Gilbert, the 2024 All-Star, made some big pitches when he needed them most. He struck out seven over 5.1 innings, walking one and hitting another while allowing two earned runs on seven hits. Rangers right fielder Brandon Nimmo took him deep on a lead-off homer in the first, and left fielder Wyatt Langford added an RBI single in the third. Gilbert threw 99 pitches and kept the damage manageable, even if the results weren't pretty.

"They didn't make it easy, for sure. It was tough. But in a weird way, that's kind of the fun one sometimes," Gilbert said after the game. "I feel like they did a good job and I also made some big pitches when I needed to."

Texas tacked on the final three runs in the final three innings through relievers Jose Ferrer and Casey Legumina. Ferrer allowed an RBI single to Rangers first baseman Jake Burger in the seventh. In the ninth, Legumina gave up an RBI sacrifice fly by designated hitter Andrew McCutchen and an RBI double by third baseman Josh Jung.

Manager Dan Wilson knows the at-bats are trending the right way, even if the results aren't there yet. "I know these guys keep working at it. It's coming soon," he said Friday. The Mariners finished 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine on base.

Game two comes Saturday at 4:15 p.m. PT on FOX. George Kirby takes the mound for Seattle against Nathan Eovaldi and the Rangers. This is a chance to snap the skid before Sunday's rubber match.
