Mark Sansone Takes Over at Maryville College After Winning National Championship at Mary Washington

Mark Sansone is the new men's basketball coach at Maryville College, and he's bringing serious hardware with him. The guy just spent 12 seasons as an assistant at Mary Washington, where he helped the Eagles go 30-3 last season and capture their first NCAA Division III national championship. That's the kind of resume that gets you a head coaching job, and Maryville College just locked it down.

Building on a Winning Tradition

Sansone is only the third head coach of the Maryville men's basketball program since 1980, which tells you how stable and successful this program has been. He's stepping into a situation where the Scots won their sixth consecutive Collegiate Conference of the South title last season. That's elite consistency.

Athletics Director Andrew Wu didn't hold back in his praise: "Mark is an outstanding fit for our tradition of excellence, a proven winner who prioritizes the growth and well-being of his student-athletes. Fresh off a national championship at Mary Washington, he brings both experience and momentum, and I'm confident his leadership will elevate our program to new heights."

New Era in the SAA

Sansone replaces Raul Placeres, who left after six seasons with a 121-47 record to take an assistant coaching position at Tennessee Tech. Maryville is entering a new chapter too, joining the Southern Athletic Association for the 2026-27 season.

Sansone said he's ready for the challenge: "This program has a rich tradition of success, and I look forward to building on that as we enter the SAA."

The 2011 Roanoke College graduate began his coaching career at Eastern University from 2012 to 2014 before landing at Mary Washington. Now he gets his shot to lead a program with serious expectations and a winning culture already in place.
