Nick Nurse Leaves 76ers Mid-Playoffs to Grieve Brother's Unexpected Death

Philadelphia 76ers head coach Nick Nurse stepped away from the team Tuesday to attend his brother's funeral, missing Game 2 of the second-round playoff series against the New York Knicks. His brother Steve Nurse, 62, died unexpectedly last Wednesday.

The timing couldn't be worse for a coach trying to salvage a season. After the Sixers got absolutely demolished 137-98 in Game 1 on Monday, Nurse needed to be there for his team's response. Instead, he was on his way to Ankeny, Iowa for the service. That's the kind of moment where basketball stops mattering, and family is all that counts.

A Brutal Start to the Series

The Sixers came out of the gates getting hammered in Game 1 at Madison Square Garden. A 39-point loss is the kind of thing that should have the entire organization in crisis mode. Nurse should've been on the court drawing up adjustments, firing guys up, figuring out how to get back into this series. Instead, he had to be somewhere else entirely. That's life sometimes. You lose a family member, and your job becomes secondary, no matter what's on the line.

Expected Back for Game 2

The good news for Philadelphia is that Nurse is expected to rejoin the team for Game 2 on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden. He'll have a chance to address what went wrong in Game 1 and try to right the ship before things get even worse.

Even the Knicks showed respect for what Nurse is going through. Coach Mike Brown offered his condolences to Nurse and his family, saying "life is precious and you don't wish that upon anybody." That's the kind of moment that reminds you there's more to life than sports, even in the playoffs.
