Ohtani Is Pitching Tuesday and Sitting Out the Lineup. Here's What That Means for the Dodgers
Shohei Ohtani is going to the mound Tuesday night against Miami, but he's staying on the bench. The Los Angeles Dodgers announced the plan after pulling out a 5-4 win over the Marlins on Monday, and it's the second time this season Ohtani will pitch without hitting. He'll be throwing on five days' rest.
This isn't some emergency move or injury concern. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is making a deliberate choice to maximize what Ohtani can do as a pitcher while giving his bat a breather. The first time this happened came back on April 15, when Ohtani struck out 10 batters in an 8-2 rout over the Astros. Now it's happening again as the Dodgers navigate managing one of baseball's most uniquely talented players.

But it also underscores how the Dodgers are thinking about him this season: as a pitcher first on certain days, a hitter on others. That's the reality of having a two-way star in the modern game, even if it feels wild watching a guy who can do everything sit in the dugout while his team is playing.
The Dodgers just beat the Marlins and are looking to build on that momentum. Ohtani on the mound Tuesday is supposed to be part of that push. Whether he's in the lineup or not, expect him to be a difference maker. That's what he does.
