Richland's New Coach Is 27, And The Evergreen State Is Stunned

Alright, Bombers fans, you are NOT going to believe this one. Richland High School, our undisputed kings of Washington high school hoops, just dropped a bombshell announcement that has the entire state talking! The program, fresh off a truly historic season, has officially hired Will Burghardt as their next head coach. And here's the kicker, folks: he's only 27 years old! That's right, the state's top team is bringing in a young gun, and it's a move that has everyone wondering if this brilliant dynasty is about to get even more electrifying.

The Bombers Are Built Different

Let's just pause for a second and appreciate what Richland has been doing. This past season, they weren't just good, they were UNTOUCHABLE. A perfect 28-0 record, culminating in a dominant 63-49 victory over Gonzaga Prep for the Class 4A state championship. Think about that: absolutely flawless, from tip-off to the final buzzer. The Bombers have now notched four consecutive seasons with 20 or more wins, consistently ranking at the top. The final Washington 2025 High School Boys Basketball Massey Rankings confirmed what we all knew, they were No. 1, end of story. This isn't just a team, it's a legitimate powerhouse, and the pressure on their new coach is gonna be immense.

The Youngest Leader Takes The Helm

So, who is this Will Burghardt, and what makes him the man to lead one of the state's most dominant programs? At 27, he's now the youngest head coach in Richland boys basketball history, making him just the seventh hire since 1947, and the 30th overall. That's a lot of history for a young coach to step into. But don't let the age fool you, this dude's got game. Burghardt spent three seasons as the head boys basketball coach at Newport (OR), where he compiled a solid 49-24 overall record. In his final season with the Cubs, he led them to an impressive 19-5 record and pushed deep into the OHSAA playoffs. He’s clearly a winner, but taking over a team coming off a perfect season? That’s a whole new level of expectation! What a wild card move by Richland! Can Coach Burghardt, at just 27, keep the Bombers' perfect streak alive and build on their championship legacy? Will he bring a fresh perspective that propels them to even greater heights, or is this the ultimate pressure cooker for a young coach? All eyes in the Evergreen State will be on Richland High when basketball season rolls around again. You know we'll be watching every single play!
