Ridly Greig's Sucker Punch Getting a Hearing on May 4, and the NHL Department of Player Safety Isn't Messing Around

The NHL's Department of Player Safety just dropped word Tuesday that Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Greig is getting called in for a hearing on May 4. The reason? A sucker punch that crossed the line. The department didn't specify whether this would be an in-person hearing, which would normally be required for something this serious, but either way, this is the kind of moment that gets everyone's attention in the league.

What Went Down

Greig threw a punch that the league viewed as a sucker punch on an opponent, and the Player Safety Department took notice. When they schedule a hearing like this, it means there's a real possibility of supplemental discipline coming down the pipe. This isn't a warning. This is the league saying we need to talk about what you did, and there could be consequences.

What's Next

The May 4 date gives Greig and the Senators a few days to prepare their case, but the hearing is locked in. Whether it happens in person or via other means is still unclear from the department's announcement, but the outcome could range from a fine to a suspension depending on how the league views the incident and what Greig has to say in his defense.

This is the kind of stuff that gets talked about in locker rooms across the league. Players know the Department of Player Safety is watching, and when they schedule a hearing like this, it sends a message that reckless plays get addressed.
