Ronald Acuna Jr. Grabbed His Hamstring and the Braves' Season Just Got Messier

Atlanta's best player left Saturday's win limping off the field, and now the Braves are sweating an MRI result that could flip their whole season upside down. Ronald Acuna Jr. felt his left hamstring tighten while running out a grounder in the second inning at Coors Field, and he pulled up immediately. He made it off the field under his own power after the medical staff checked him out, but manager Walt Weiss wasn't taking any chances. An MRI is coming, and in May, that's the kind of news that makes you hold your breath.

The 2023 NL MVP Is Already Struggling at the Plate

Here's the thing that makes this injury timing even uglier: Acuna hasn't been himself in the early stretch anyway. He's sitting at .252 with just two home runs and nine RBIs through 34 games. That's not the dominant force the Braves need right now. He did get on the board on Saturday with a leadoff single and scored when Drake Baldwin cranked a homer behind him, but one solid at-bat doesn't erase the concern.

The Braves Rolled Without Him, But They Can't Afford This Long-Term

On the bright side, Atlanta hammered Colorado 9-1 on Saturday, so at least the offense showed up. Eli White stepped in to replace Acuna in right field and is hitting .196 with two homers and eight RBIs in 20 games. That's... not exactly a downgrade you want to count on for an extended stretch. The Braves can win individual games without their best player, but you don't build a season on hope and depth. Wait for the MRI results and see where this thing actually goes.
