Roosevelt Legend Darnellia Russell Brings State Title Home to Eastside Catholic

Twenty-two years after leading Roosevelt High School to an improbable Class 3A girls basketball state championship, Darnellia Russell just did it again. This time, she was on the sidelines. Russell coached Eastside Catholic to the state title earlier this month, with the Crusaders defeating top-seeded Bellevue 55-43 in the championship game. Not bad for a team that started the season 2-5 and had already lost twice to the Wolverines before that final showdown.

From Player to Coach: Russell's Unlikely Path

Russell knows a thing or two about overcoming the odds. Back in 2004, she was a senior at Roosevelt when she led the Roughriders to that shocking state title, beating heavily-favored city rival Garfield. But here's the wild part: Russell almost never got to play that season. After finishing fifth at state in 2002, Russell became pregnant. When she hoped to return as a senior, she was ruled academically ineligible by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association because of the school she missed during the spring. The WIAA denied her appeal.

Enter attorney Kenyon Luce, who took her case pro bono. A King County Superior Court judge granted a temporary restraining order that let Russell play anyway. The WIAA sued Roosevelt, but the school kept playing Russell even though they risked forfeiting every win if they lost. A couple weeks after Russell won the title, both sides agreed to end the litigation. Four years later, a documentary called "The Heart of the Game" told the whole story, focusing on then-Roosevelt coach Bill Resler, Russell, and everything that led to that championship.

After Roosevelt, Russell played two seasons at North Seattle Community College. She coached AAU teams while working, then became an assistant coach at Shoreline College in 2012 before taking the head job during the 2014-15 season through 2016-17. Russell realized she wanted to coach high school girls earlier. "I was getting kids who were not developed and had not been taught the basic fundamentals," she said. "I was like, 'How are these coaches sending these girls to colleges without knowing anything?'"

In 2023, coaching jobs opened up at both Garfield and Eastside Catholic. Russell chose Eastside Catholic because the hiring process moved faster. The results speak for themselves: 11-17 in year one, 16-12 in year two, and now 21-8 with a state title in year three. "The third year is typically when you see great coaching come to fruition," Russell noted.
