Sandy Koufax Just Got Baseball's Biggest Honor and the List of Names Before Him Says Everything

Sandy Koufax, the Hall of Famer who built his legend in Dodger blue, just won the Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Baseball Digest. The honor landed Thursday, joining some absolutely legendary company on a very short list.

A List That Reads Like Baseball Royalty

This is the sixth Lifetime Achievement Award the organization has handed out, and the names before Koufax tell you exactly how exclusive this thing is. Willie Mays got it first in 2021. Then Vin Scully (2022), Joe Torre (2023), Dusty Baker (2024), and Bob Costas (2025). Now Koufax. That's the entire list. Five other legends, and now the man who basically invented dominance on the mound.

The award itself recognizes "a living individual whose career has been spent in or around Major League Baseball and who has demonstrated outstanding character and has made significant contributions to the game." In Koufax's case, that's putting it lightly.

The Brooklyn Kid Who Changed Everything

Koufax made his big league debut for his hometown Brooklyn Dodgers in 1955, the same year the franchise won its first World Series championship. When the team moved west to Los Angeles, he became one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball during the 1960s. Three Cy Young Awards, an MVP trophy, and five consecutive National League ERA titles. At 90 years old, he's still recognized as one of the greatest to ever throw a baseball.

"It's a great honor to be recognized along with the previous award winners," Koufax said in a statement. "I thank the distinguished panel."

That's Koufax for you. Legendary on the field, classy about the accolades off it.
