Smith-Njigba And Witherspoon Just Got Paid: Seahawks Lock In Their 2023 First-Round Studs
The Seahawks just made it official: Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Devon Witherspoon are staying in Seattle for the long haul. GM John Schneider exercised the fifth-year options on both cornerback Devon Witherspoon and receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, cementing these two 2023 first-round picks as core pieces of the franchise's championship core.
Two Studs, One Vision
This is a no-brainer move for a team that just won the Super Bowl. Smith-Njigba has become a centerpiece in Brian Fleury's offense, while Witherspoon anchors the secondary under Mike Macdonald's defensive scheme. These guys were drafted to be long-term answers, and the options lock them in through next season and beyond. For a team still riding the high of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy, committing to your young stars is exactly the right call.
Building For the Future
The Seahawks are making a statement with this move: we're not tearing this down, we're building on it. Smith-Njigba gives Sam Darnold a legitimate weapon on the outside, while Witherspoon is the kind of lockdown corner you build a defense around. When you've got pieces like these in their prime years, you don't let them walk. You lock them up and keep pushing.
This is the kind of move that keeps championship teams competitive for years to come. The 12s should feel good about where this roster is heading.
