Taylor Gray Outlasted Sheldon Creed in a Chaotic Kansas Race and Nobody Saw It Coming
Taylor Gray pulled off the kind of gutsy pit strategy that wins races on Saturday night at Kansas Speedway, fending off a hard-charging Sheldon Creed down the stretch to claim his second NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series victory. In a final 95-lap green-flag run, Gray's crew chief Jason Ratcliff made the call to pit first on Lap 143, and it paid off. Gray grabbed the lead during the cycle and held on by just 0.718 seconds over Creed, who spent the last 40 laps hunting him down.
The Pit Call That Changed Everything
Ratcliff's decision to get Gray in the pits early was the difference maker. When Brandon Jones and Creed came off pit road on Lap 147, they were three seconds back. Jones, who had won both of the first two stages, got slapped with a pass-through penalty for a tire violation and lost his shot at victory. But Creed, with Justin Allgaier lurking in third, wasn't done. He methodically worked his way forward, but Gray and his No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota wouldn't break. "That pit call was awesome," Gray said after climbing out of the car. "We had a car capable of winning." He admitted Jones looked faster early, but staying locked in and getting a good adjustment made the difference in the final stretch.

While Creed came up short on the win, finishing second earned him something he'd been chasing for years. By finishing first among four eligible drivers, he scored his first ever Dash 4 Cash bonus of $100,000. It took him five tries to cash in. "It's just really cool to be able to bring a hundred grand back to the Haas Factory Team," Creed said, even though his No. 00 had to start at the back of the field after failing pre-race inspection.
Allgaier rounded out the podium in third and extended his series lead to 131 points over Creed. The race itself was a wild one, featuring 11 lead changes among eight drivers. Early on, Carson Kvapil's No. 1 JR Motorsports Chevrolet got launched into the air and barrel-rolled down the backstretch after contact from William Byron and Parker Retzlaff. Kvapil walked away but took a mandatory trip to the infield care center. Corey Day's streak of eight straight top 10 finishes ended with a 12th-place result after a Lap 101 accident and flat tire.
Gray, Creed, Allgaier, and Love have already qualified for the third Dash 4 Cash race of the season coming up this Saturday at Talladega Superspeedway.
