The 27-Year-Old Will Burghardt Is Coaching Richland, And The State Is Not Ready

Alright, Emerald City hoop fanatics, buckle up! You know our state's No. 1 team, the Richland Bombers, right? The squad that just went an unheard-of 28-0 and snagged a state championship? Well, they just pulled a move that's gonna send ripples across Washington high school basketball. Richland announced Thursday they've tapped a 27-year-old, Will Burghardt, to lead the charge as their next head coach! If you thought the Bombers were tough before, get ready.

Meet the Bombers' Bold New Ringmaster

This isn't just any coaching hire, folks. Will Burghardt is now the youngest head coach in Richland boys basketball program history. The man is only 27! That's a bold play by the Bombers, a program that's only seen seven head coaches since 1947, with 30 total in their history. But don't mistake youth for inexperience. Burghardt is coming off three seasons as the head coach for Newport (OR) boys basketball, where he built a solid 49-24 overall record. In his final season leading the Cubs, he guided them to an impressive 19-5 record and a deep playoff run in the OHSAA. He knows how to win, and he's bringing that energy right into the heart of Washington.

Richland's Dynasty Just Got Another Gear

Let's talk about the team Burghardt is inheriting. This isn't just a good team; it's a bonafide dynasty. Richland just capped off their fourth consecutive season with 20 or more wins. And how did they finish this past 2025-26 season? Only with a perfect 28-0 record and a Class 4A state championship, beating Gonzaga Prep 63-49 in the final. They were ranked No. 1 in the final Washington 2025 High School Boys Basketball Massey Rankings, and for good reason! They are the benchmark for hoops in our state, and now they've got a young, hungry coach ready to take the reins. So, Bombers fans, you've got a fresh face at the helm, a young gun ready to prove himself on the biggest stage in Washington high school hoops. The rest of the state? They better be taking notes. Can Burghardt take this already dominant program and push them even further? What will that 28-0 squad look like under his leadership? We'll be watching every step of the way when the new season kicks off. Get ready for some serious basketball!
