The Seahawks Just Drafted a Running Back in Round 1, and Here's Why That Matters

The 2026 NFL draft is underway, and the Seattle Seahawks made their move early: they selected a running back in the first round. It's a statement about where this team is headed under Mike Macdonald and offensive coordinator Brian Fleury.

Building Around Sam Darnold

With Sam Darnold locked in at quarterback, the Seahawks' front office is investing in the ground game. That's a clear signal that they want to establish a physical, balanced offense that can lean on the run while opening up play action downfield. Pair a fresh running back with the receiving talents of Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Rashid Shaheed, and Cooper Kupp, and you've got the pieces for a dynamic attack.

The First-Round Investment

Running back was the priority in Round 1 for Seattle. In a draft class full of needs and shiny offensive skill positions, the Seahawks doubled down on establishing a power running game. That tells you something about how Macdonald and the coaching staff want to play football on Sunday. This isn't a team trying to outscore everyone. This is a team building a foundation.

What's Next

The draft continues, and Seattle still has work to do across the roster. But with a new running back in the fold and a quarterback they believe in, the Seahawks are laying down a marker for what the offense will look like going forward. Watch how this back develops as the team's season unfolds.
