This NEVER Happened Before: Randy Johnson's Records: The Marks He's Left on MLB

MLB Sports

When the discussion turns to the most dominant pitchers in baseball history, Randy Johnson, affectionately known as "The Big Unit," is always front and center. His imposing 6-foot-10 frame and blazing fastball struck fear into countless batters for over two decades. Johnson retired as one of the most prolific strikeout artists the game has ever seen, leaving an indelible mark in the record books.

Johnson's career strikeout total of 4,875 places him fifth all-time, a testament to his incredible longevity and consistent ability to overpower hitters. He holds the record for the most career strikeouts by a left-handed pitcher and is one of only two pitchers (alongside Nolan Ryan) to strike out over 4,000 batters. His single-game prowess was also legendary; in 2001, at 37 years old, Johnson joined an elite club by recording 20 strikeouts in a nine-inning game, a feat only accomplished a handful of times in MLB history. He also led his league in strikeouts nine times, another impressive record for a southpaw.

A Hall of Fame Resume

Beyond his staggering strikeout numbers, Randy Johnson’s trophy cabinet is equally impressive. He captured an incredible five Cy Young Awards, including four consecutive from 1999 to 2002 with the Arizona Diamondbacks, making him one of only two pitchers ever to achieve such a streak. During this dominant period, he also pitched a rare perfect game in 2004 against the Atlanta Braves, becoming the oldest pitcher in MLB history at 40 years old to accomplish the feat. His contributions were pivotal in the Diamondbacks' 2001 World Series victory, where he shared the World Series MVP award, cementing his legacy as a true big-game pitcher. Johnson’s combination of sheer power, longevity, and clutch performances ensures his place among baseball’s all-time greats.
