This Seattle Mariners Loss Hurts... A Lot.

We obviously don't expect the Seattle Mariners to win every game, but there are some losses that hurt more than others. Today, the Mariners 5-4 loss to the Los Angeles Angeles hurts a lot, and a lot more given the circumstances.

Mariners had a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the 7th with Bryan Woo still on the mound, and unfortunately his day was over after a two-run homer by Micky Moniak that tied the game at 4-4. Mariners had TWO runners on in both the 8th and 9th inning and came up with no runs. On top of this, they had Cal Raleigh make one of the best doubles plays we've ever seen... Yet, the Mariners ended up with a loss.

Andrés Muñoz got two quick outs in the bottom of the 9th, but gave up a walk-off solo homer to Moniak (yes him again) and the Angels win 5-4.
This stretch of 10 games IS the Mariners chance to make a playoff run. This is the 10 game stretch (records BEFORE game 1 against Angels):
  • 3 @ Los Angeles Angeles (55-79)
  • 4 @ Oakland Athletics (58-76)
  • 3 @ St Louis Cardinals (67-67)

Sure it's a 10-game road trip, but it's against TWO 50-win teams, and a .500 Cardinals team.

Mariners are 5 games back of the Houston Astros after the loss, and 4.5 games back of the Wild Card. These are the games you need to win to stay alive in the race.

It's been such an up and down season, 60 days ago we were 10 games up in the division, and then the collapse happened. Manager fired, on the outside-looking-in in the division, and finding ways to lose games that are in our control.

Clearly, it's not over, it's just frustrating to lose a game with a 4-2 lead in the 7th, Julio Rodriguez and Justin turner both having three-hit games, and having multiple runners on in the 8th and 9th.

It feels like this is a game that GOOD teams win, and average teams just might lose, and the Mariners keep creeping back to .500... They might be just perfectly mediocre.

Obviously baseball is an everyday sport, they might win tomorrow, and go give us a four-game sweep in Oakland, and the tone will change, but as of tonight, this one really is unfortunate and disappointing.

You have to win that one.
