UNC Ranked Outside Top 25 and the Transfer Portal Didn't Save Them
Here's the brutal truth: while every other college basketball powerhouse has been loading up in the transfer portal over the last two weeks, North Carolina got left behind. According to ESPN's Jeff Borzello, the Tar Heels aren't even cracking the top 25 in way-too-early 2026-27 rankings. They're not close. That's a massive red flag for a program that just went through one of the messiest offseasons imaginable.
What Went Wrong
Head coach Michael Malone actually did solid work trying to rebuild after most of last season's rotation scattered to the wind. The problem? Almost everything he brought in is a developmental piece. That's fine in theory, but given UNC's recent struggles in postseason play and the mess that is the NIL landscape, that approach feels risky when you're trying to compete at an elite level.

Now Malone is asking Jarin Stevenson, Maximo Adams, Maxim Logue, and Cade Bennerman to fill that void. These guys have decent floors and real potential to develop into quality contributors, but everything depends on Malone actually coaching them up. There's no safety net here.
Can Malone Pull Off a Miracle?
Don't count him out completely. The man literally led the Denver Nuggets to their first NBA title in franchise history in 2023. Yeah, he had Nikola Jokic, the best player on the planet, but Malone still had to build and mold that roster from day one. That's exactly why North Carolina hired him in the first place: his ability to squeeze everything out of whatever he's got.
If anyone can prove the rankings wrong and turn a bunch of developmental pieces into a tournament team, it's Malone. But it's going to take time, and UNC might need to win some games first before anyone takes them seriously again.
