Veronica Burton Just Locked In With Golden State, and the WNBA's New Franchise Got Its First Star

The Golden State Valkyries aren't messing around in their inaugural season. On Saturday, they announced they've re-signed guard Veronica Burton to a multi-year contract, locking in one of their core pieces for the long haul. This is the kind of move that signals a franchise is serious about building something real, not just showing up for Year One and hoping for the best.

Burton Is Already Playing at an Elite Level

If you watched the Valkyries at all last season, you know Burton was doing work on the defensive end. She made the WNBA All-Defensive Second Team, which tells you everything about how valuable she is when the other team has the ball. In a league where defense travels, that's a huge deal. The Valkyries clearly believe she's worth keeping around as they build this thing out.

Golden State Building for the Future

This multi-year deal is a statement. The Valkyries are in their expansion season, which means they're sorting through what works and what doesn't in real time. Re-signing Burton early signals confidence in her as part of the franchise's identity going forward. She's not a one-and-done rental. She's a cornerstone piece.

The Valkyries have a busy offseason ahead. They're deep in their offseason tracker, and there's plenty more to figure out as the season rolls on. But locking up a two-way guard who earned All-Defensive honors? That's the kind of foundation you build championships on.

What's Next

The Valkyries host the Seattle Storm on April 26 and the Phoenix Mercury on May 11. Golden State's got some work ahead, but at least they know they'll have Burton anchoring the backcourt.
