2001 Slam Dunk Champion Desmond Mason Arrested on Felony Warrant After Months on the Run

Desmond Mason, the 2001 NBA Slam Dunk contest champion who played for the Seattle SuperSonics early in his career, was arrested on a felony warrant in Bricktown, Oklahoma. The 48-year-old former NBA veteran was taken to the hospital for a medical issue before being transported to jail, where he remained detained on charges related to flight to avoid prosecution.

From Seattle to Legal Trouble

Mason made stops in Seattle, Milwaukee, New Orleans, Oklahoma City, and Sacramento during his NBA career. The SuperSonics selected him with the No. 17 pick in the 2000 NBA draft out of Oklahoma State, giving him his first shot in the league. Now, decades after his playing days, the retired athlete is facing serious legal consequences that authorities have been pursuing since February.

The Details Behind the Arrest

According to the Melissa Police Department in Collin County, Texas, a couple filed a police report in January claiming they commissioned Mason in March 2025 to frame a piece of sports memorabilia. The department reported that Mason was paid a total of $9,822.86 for the job.

Mason sent the couple a photograph of the completed framing in April 2025 and promised to deliver the final product, but then stopped communicating with them for several months. The sports memorabilia and associated authentication documents were valued at around $40,000. Police had been searching for Mason since February before finally apprehending him in Oklahoma. News 9 reported that Mason remained in jail on the basis of "flight to avoid," which applies to someone who crossed borders to evade prosecution.

From Slam Dunk contest glory to a jail cell, Mason's fall from his basketball accomplishments serves as a stark reminder of how quickly life can change off the court.
