Drafted 19th overall by the Lightning in 2012, Vasilevskiy bypassed college altogether, instead rising through the ranks of Salavat Yulaev Ufa's system. He began his journey in the MHL (Russia's top junior league) with Tolpar Ufa, where his exceptional athleticism and imposing size quickly made him stand out. It wasn't long before his talents earned him a promotion to the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), one of the world's premier professional leagues, playing for Salavat Yulaev Ufa. Competing against seasoned professionals at such a young age, often as a teenager, provided an invaluable crucible for his development. He faced high-caliber shooters and experienced intense pressure, refining his positional play, glove hand, and mental fortitude far earlier than most North American peers.
This demanding environment allowed Vasilevskiy to mature rapidly, gaining experience that would typically take years in other systems.
