Before becoming the NFL star leading the Philadelphia Eagles, Jalen Hurts carved out a fascinating and transformative college career that showcased his unwavering resilience and immense talent. His journey began in 2016 at the University of Alabama, a powerhouse known for developing NFL-caliber talent. As a true freshman, Hurts defied expectations, quickly taking the starting job and leading the Crimson Tide to an SEC Championship and a College Football Playoff National Championship appearance. He displayed remarkable poise, a strong arm, and exceptional rushing ability, becoming a dangerous dual-threat quarterback right out of the gate and proving he belonged on college football's biggest stage.
From Tide to Sooner: A Defining Transfer
Hurts continued to lead Alabama through his sophomore season, but his time in Tuscaloosa took an unexpected turn during the 2018 National Championship game. Benched at halftime in favor of Tua Tagovailoa, he watched from the sidelines as Alabama mounted a comeback victory. Despite the difficult situation, Hurts handled it with incredible grace and maturity, even returning to relieve an injured Tagovailoa the following season in the SEC Championship. This eventual quarterback controversy led to his pivotal decision to transfer in 2019, seeking a new home where he could fully hone his passing skills.
He found that opportunity at the University of Oklahoma. Under the guidance of then-head coach Lincoln Riley, Hurts blossomed into an even more complete quarterback. His senior season with the Sooners was nothing short of spectacular; he threw for 3,851 yards and 32 touchdowns while rushing for an additional 1,298 yards and 20 scores. This incredible performance earned him a Heisman Trophy runner-up finish and led Oklahoma to another College Football Playoff berth. His time at Oklahoma solidified his development as a passer, demonstrating significant improvement in accuracy, anticipation, and decision-making, turning him into one of the most dynamic offensive weapons in college football history and setting the stage for his NFL future.
