Despite his limited experience, Embiid quickly showcased an incredible aptitude for the game. Under Self's tutelage, he rapidly developed a sophisticated offensive arsenal, displaying an uncanny feel for post-ups, an emerging jump hook, and impressive footwork for a player of his size. On the defensive end, he was a revelation, combining his imposing 7-foot frame with remarkable athleticism and timing to become an elite shot-blocker and rim protector.
His freshman campaign was nothing short of spectacular, averaging 11.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks in just 23.1 minutes per game. He was on track to be a unanimous number one overall pick before a stress fracture in his back unfortunately cut his season short late in February. This injury, though a setback, didn't diminish his incredible potential in the eyes of NBA scouts, who had witnessed enough in his 28 games to project him as a future cornerstone.
Embiid's lone year at Kansas was a crucial stepping stone, proving that his late start was no barrier to greatness. It laid the foundation for the dominant, MVP-caliber player he would become in the NBA, showcasing a unique blend of skill, athleticism, and defensive prowess that was refined in the crucible of college basketball.
