Kam Mercer Is Reclassifying to 2027 and Cincinnati Fans Should Be Absolutely Hyped

Alright, college hoops fans, get ready for this, because some massive news just dropped that's gonna send shockwaves through the recruiting world! Top-10 high school sophomore Kam Mercer, a legitimate five-star talent, has officially committed to Cincinnati. But that's not even the wildest part, folks. Mercer is also planning to reclassify up into the 2027 class, meaning he's heading to college a year earlier than expected. This is a game-changer for the Bearcats and a huge statement in college basketball, no doubt about it.

Cincinnati's New Star Is a Homegrown Talent

Let's talk about Kam Mercer for a second. This kid is the real deal, ranked No. 7 in the SC Next 25 for the class of 2028. And get this, when those 2027 rankings drop later this month, he's projected to be chilling inside the top 20. He's not just some random recruit, either; Mercer is a Cincinnati native, straight out of Princeton High School in Ohio. You love to see a hometown hero making big moves! This 6-foot-5 wing is a left-handed playmaker who brings serious game to the court. Plus, he's already got a gold medal under his belt, winning with USA Basketball at the 2025 FIBA U16 AmeriCup, where he averaged 5.8 points and 3.0 rebounds over six games. The dude's a winner.

A Game-Changing Commit for Coach Calhoun

This commitment isn't just big; it's historic for Cincinnati. Mercer is the highest-ranked recruit to commit to the program since ESPN started its recruiting database back in 2007. Think about that for a second! He's also their first five-star commit since the legendary Lance Stephenson rolled through in 2009. That's some serious company to be in! For new Cincinnati coach Jerrod Calhoun, this is an absolutely massive statement recruit, his very first high school signing since taking the reins earlier this spring. Mercer himself is clearly all-in on Calhoun and the program, saying, "They made me a priority, and once I made my visit, I felt very comfortable there. Growing up in Cincinnati, it means a lot to me to play here." He also gave Coach Calhoun a ringing endorsement: "Coach Calhoun knows what success looks like at Cincinnati. He was there when they were very successful under Bob Huggins. He's been successful everywhere he's been as a head coach. Coach Calhoun is a good person. He's down to earth and he's a family guy. That's important to me." Talk about belief in your coach, right? This is a monumental moment for Cincinnati basketball. A top-tier, hometown talent committed to the program and reclassifying to get there faster. It's exactly the kind of move that can light a fire under a program and send them soaring. You've gotta wonder what impact this will have on recruiting moving forward, and what kind of magic Coach Calhoun and Mercer can cook up together. Keep an eye on the Bearcats, because things just got a whole lot more exciting down in Cincy!
