The Bucks Era Begins
Alcindor, who would soon convert to Islam and change his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, wasted absolutely no time making his presence felt. In his rookie season (1969-70), he averaged a phenomenal 28.8 points and 14.5 rebounds per game, earning him the NBA Rookie of the Year award and immediately transforming the struggling Bucks into a playoff contender. The following season, after the acquisition of legendary point guard Oscar Robertson, the Bucks soared. They captured their first and only NBA championship in 1971, with Abdul-Jabbar leading the charge and earning his first of six MVP awards. His early career trajectory was nothing short of meteoric.
Kareem's dominance continued throughout his tenure in Milwaukee. He secured two more MVP trophies with the Bucks in 1972 and 1974, showcasing his unstoppable skyhook and all-around game. He consistently led the league in scoring and rebounding, establishing himself as the premier big man of his era. While his time in Milwaukee was relatively short, lasting just six seasons, he forged an incredible legacy, propelling a fledgling franchise to the pinnacle of basketball before his eventual trade to the Los Angeles Lakers in 1975, where he would continue to etch his name into NBA immortality.
