The Tacoma Dome roared with an unforgettable display of grit, power, and precision this past weekend at the WIAA Mat Classic XXXVII. Washington state high school wrestling once again delivered drama and historic achievements, with Toppenish's Adalyne Montiel and Justyce Zuniga each etching their names into the record books as four-time state champions. Their incredible individual feats spearheaded an absolutely dominant showing for the Valley, as Toppenish girls secured their fifth consecutive team title, Wapato boys defended their 1A crown, and Granger boys wrestled their way to a hard-fought 2B team championship. It was a true celebration of the dedicated athletes who pour their hearts into this grueling sport.

Toppenish Wildcat Legacy: Four-Timers and Five-Peat Champions

The spotlight often finds the truly exceptional, and Toppenish High School certainly had its share this year. In a moment that felt "a little different" for her, Adalyne Montiel completed a dream journey, clinching her fourth individual state title. This monumental achievement was a cornerstone of the Toppenish girls' program securing an astounding fifth straight team championship. That's a dynasty, plain and simple, built on consistent excellence and relentless dedication. The Wildcat spirit also burned brightly on the boys' side, where Justyce Zuniga showcased a dominant career, culminating in his own fourth individual state title in the 2A classification. Zuniga's fast-paced, unyielding style was a spectacle to behold throughout his high school tenure. The Toppenish boys' squad, fueled by Zuniga's leadership, fought valiantly to a strong second-place finish in the 2A team standings, demonstrating the breadth of talent within their wrestling community.

Wapato's Depth Prevails, Granger Girls and Boys Ascend

The Mat Classic also celebrated other deserving champions. Wapato High School's boys once again proved that depth and a strong foundation lead to ultimate victory, successfully defending their 1A team title. Built from the bottom up, their collective strength overwhelmed the competition. Not far behind, Zillah High School's boys finished as the 1A runner-up, powered by an impressive three individual state champions of their own, highlighting the incredible talent in the Yakima Valley. In the 2B classification, Granger High School's boys claimed a pair of individual titles en route to a narrow, but well-deserved, team championship. This was a program clearly on the rise, executing when it mattered most. The Granger girls also made a powerful statement, taking home the 1A/2B runner-up trophy. Their success was galvanized by a trio of outstanding performances: Gabrielle Berger closed out her high school career in style with a repeat championship, Sonia Mendoza finally captured the title she had been tirelessly chasing for four years, and freshman sensation Vanessa Torres launched what promises to be an extraordinary career with her very first state championship. These young athletes represent the future of Washington wrestling, and their performances were inspiring. Mat Classic XXXVII was a testament to the incredible commitment and skill of Washington's high school wrestlers. From record-breaking individual achievements to hard-fought team championships, these athletes left everything on the mat, proving why WIAA wrestling is a cornerstone of prep sports in our state. The passion, the tears, the triumphs, and the sheer athleticism truly encapsulate the spirit of competition. We eagerly await to see what new heights these programs and athletes will reach in the seasons to come.
