Padres Prospect Pleads Guilty to Transporting Immigrants, Facing Deportation at 19

This is a heavy one. San Diego Padres pitching prospect Humberto Cruz, just 19 years old, pleaded guilty to a federal charge of receiving money to transport noncitizen immigrants within the United States. According to the San Diego Tribune, the move signals the end of his baseball career in America before it really started.

The Legal Fallout

Cruz is not a U.S. citizen himself, and in his plea agreement, he acknowledged that deportation is almost certain. The Padres confirmed to the Tribune that he'll almost certainly lose his work visa for 10 years, though he can reapply after five years if he can show good behavior going forward.

Here's the timeline: Cruz was arrested near a border town in late October while rehabbing at the Padres' spring training facility in Arizona. He'd undergone Tommy John surgery the previous August and was working his way back. The organization has since placed him on the restricted list.

The Deal

Cruz pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge in November after prosecutors agreed to dismiss a felony charge. He was sentenced to 30 days in prison, with credit already given for time served.

This is a tough situation for everyone involved. A young player's career derailed before he could even pitch in professional games. The Padres organization dealing with the fallout. And Cruz facing deportation at an age when most prospects are still figuring out their role in the organization.
